The Mechanisms That Run the Machine
One of the things we want to accomplish is establishing a clear framework for understanding what happened to us, why it happened, and the systems that shaped us.
To do that, we need to start with the mechanisms that run the machine.
Before we can examine the larger frameworks, we first need to understand the individual parts that make them work.
We want to understand and explain the mechanisms: what they are, how they work, why they work, and how to spot them.
Part of that means looking beyond our own experiences and examining what psychology, sociology, history, and peer-reviewed research have to say.
By understanding them, we can better understand ourselves, the environments we were part of, and hopefully avoid being fooled by the same tactics in the future.
Our experiences are personal, but the mechanisms are not.
Other people have experienced them.
Researchers have studied them.
Psychologists have identified them.
Sociologists have documented them.
They are used in religion, politics, marketing, workplaces, social movements, online communities, and even our personal relationships. They are not unique to any one ideology, institution, or group. They are part of how human beings think, connect, belong, influence, and are influenced.
Continue the investigation
Looking at things from more than one perspective and through different lenses helped us make sense of our own experiences. Understanding these mechanisms brought clarity to questions many of us have asked:
Why did this happen to me?
Why did this work?
Why did I stay?
Why was it so hard to leave?
And hopefully, it will help us further navigate our deconstruction as we sift through the debris left behind…
